History...Today

The Modesto Bee today gave me a chilly reminder...

15 years ago this day, was the day Nancy Kerrigan was unfortunately attacked during a practice session for the 1994 U.S Figure Skating Championships in Detroit, Michigan.

The Bee also reminded me that night Scott Davis won his second U.S. Title.

And while on the topic of U.S. Nationals...I'll be there in 17 days...this time in Cleveland!

More nationals talk...seems it's a showdown between Kansas City, Missouri and Greensboro, North Carolina for the 2011 event. Kansas City last hosted the event in 1985 and Greensboro has never hosted the event. If you check sites such as the World Figure Skating Report...you can tell Greensboro is trying to get the media momentum...lots of stories!

It really is! To me, this is the day that thrust figure skating into pop culture.

My fellow skating friends joke that this was the point where people stopped asking if we'd ever been to the Olympics and started asking if we knew Nancy or Tonya.

I think the 1994 Olympic Ladies Free Skate is still in the top ten most watched sporting events...ever!

In terms of number of people who watched Ladies Short was 45.7 Million. The third most watched event ever on US television after Mash. And the second most watched sports event ever after Super bowl XLII. In terms of household percentage, it is the 6th most watched program ever: 48.5% share. oksana baiul won her gold fair and square. Nancy was so wooden.
