New Heights!

Just a quick note from me personally at Axel, Loops, and Spins...

I love blogging so much and I hope you all enjoy this blog. I had a record breaking 35 posts this month...for all you math whizzes that's an average of 1.13 posts per day. Also, blog traffic has increased 345% from this same time last year and I have visitors from 23 different countries checking in on this site. Really, thank you all!

And there are more great things to come. I'm going to be really earning the frequent flyer miles as I will be attending a whopping four major Championships live! Expect daily blogs, pictures, and reports from Skate America, U.S. Nationals (I talked myself into it!), Four Continents Cup, and the pinnacle of it all the World Championships in Los Angeles! There's lots of skating intrigue to cover as we head toward the 2010 Olympics, Scott Hamilton will try to win it all on Celebrity Apprentice, and so much more. A sneak peak at future endeavours...I'm planning on attending the World Championships in 2010...they're in Torino, Italy! Stay tuned!

So long as you all keep reading...I'll keep writing! Once more, all my friends of figure skating, thanks.

Junior Grand Prix: Spain

This past week the Junior Grand Prix concluded in Madrid, Spain with the U.S. winning four medals, two gold and two silver.

Kristine Musademba took home her second Gold of the Junior Grand Prix while Armin Mahbanoozadeh bettered his Silver from France and captured Gold.

Silver Medals went to Becky Bereswill and Ice Dancers Maia and Alex Shibutani.

These results clinch spots at the Junior Grand Prix Final for Musademba, Bereswill, and the Shibutani's.

Full results can be seen here.

This week the Junior Grand Prix moves to Gomel, Belarus.

2008 Nebelhorn Trophy

This past weekend brought the first major Senior ISU competition of the season. Some surprises here and there and some interesting items to report.

Amongst the men, Nobunari Oda of Japan had a good competitive redebut by winning the men's title. He was able to hold his lead from the short program over the defending champion Michael Brezina of the Czech Republic. Yannick Ponsero of France was a distant third. Surprisingly, Tomas Verner, also of the Czech Republic, reigning European Champion could only muster fourth place...a dissapointing start to his season. Scott Smith and Dennis Phan finished seventh and eigth, respectively.

In Ice Dance, Americans Samuelson and Bates won both the Original and Free Dance and captured their first senior title. The Americans were able to hold off the Israeli team of Zaretski and Zaretski, who lead after the Compolsory Dance but fell behind in later parts of the competition. The Americans also took bronze with Summersett and Gilles. "We skated great," said Samuelson. "We're really happy with how we performed. It was a great senior international debut for us."

No big surprises in Pairs. Savchenko and Szolkowy of Germany posted an easy win over Russians Mukhortova and Trankov. Ukranian's Volosozhar and Morozov, as expected, won the Bronze. Very strong senior debut for American's Denney and Barrett, they finished fourth overall and was actually third in the free skate. Yankowskas and Coughlin were sixth.

Amongst the ladies Alissa Czisny pulled out an impressive win jumpstarting her season. With the withdrawl of Carolina Kostner she seized the opportunity to take her second ISU Senior title. She held off Finnish upstart Laura Lepisto who won the silver and Akiko Suzuki of Japan who took Bronze. Chrissy Hughes of the U.S. in her senior debut finished 13th. After the competition, Alissa spoke with Icenetwork reporters, "I've been working with Linda [Leaver] and Brian [Boitano] on my [jump] technique, and this year it's starting to click. That's one of the things that's making me better plus I'm a little more relaxed in competition."

Apparently there is a team trophy awarded at Nebelhorn and on the strength of Czisny, Samuelson and Bates, as well Summersett and Gilles the American team was able to win that as well!

Full Results can be seen here.

To Cleveland...or not to Cleveland...

To Cleveland, or not to Cleveland...that is the question.

I'm conflicted! I made a conscious decision this year to bypass going to Nationals and rather go to Four Continents Cup and World's...now I'm thinking I want to go to Nationals too! Am I just getting figure skating greedy?

Oh...but the wallet...it's looking at me and saying. "Really? You're pushing me to the limits here! Can't you just enjoy it on NBC...in HD none-the-less!"

But I love to go to these things live...it's so much fun. I live only 7 1/2 hours from Cleveland so theoretically I could drive (I know, I know...gas prices!)and save money on airfare and rental car. Individual tickets go on Sale tomorrow and so much to decide upon! 5 good reasons to go to Nationals:

#5 Pictures for me equal pictures for you!
#4 Rematch...Johnny vs. Evan!
#3 Cleveland rocks...no pun intended (Get it...Rock City..Cleveland Rocks...not funny huh?)
#2 Yay! Everyone is old enough to go to Worlds this year!
#1 Epic Battle for the two available spots on the World Team for the women.

Really...I think I have to be there!

UPDATE: It's settled...I'll be in Cleveland for all the Event Finals!

Sasha Cohen...Grace, Style, Beauty...Foodie?

In this recent article, Sasha Cohen spills on all her favorite foods.

Favorite frozen treat...Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream (good choice). Best Smucker's (
Sponsor of Stars on Ice) product...sundae toppings. Funniest person at the dinner table...John Zimmerman! Sasha is quoted as saying. "It’s definitely John Zimmerman. He’s the biggest eater, but has an incredible body."

Um...watch out Silvia...Sasha is after your man!

Sasha also shared her apple dessert recipe, sounds delicious!:

Race is on!

It seems like there is constantly Olympic Bid news happening. As we prepare for Vancouver 2010 and look to the future for Sochi 2014, things are already underway for the selection of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

Today, France announced it will put forward a bid city for the 2018 Games. Grenoble, Annecy, and Nice are on the shortlist.

Other cities in the hunt for 2018 include Pyeongchang, South Korea; Munich, Germany; Santiago, Chile; Geneva, Switzerland; Tromsoe, Norway; and Reno/Lake Tahoe (shared bid), Nevada, USA.

The International Olympic Committee will choose the host city in 2011. Who do you think should get it?

Again!

In his final appearance before the Bulgarian Supreme Court, Maxim Staviski apologized again to the families of Peter Petrov and his girlfriend. Last summer, Maxim Staviski was driving while incredibly intoxicated and crashed his vehicle into another killing Petrov, the driver of the other vehichle, and severely injuring Petrov's girlfriend.

"I'm deeply sorry for what happened back then. I'm always informed about Manuela's (Petrov's girlfriend) condition and the progress of her treatment. Unfortunately, I can't do anything to make her stop suffering."

This is the last court appearance Maxim will have to make in connection with this case. In a previous appearance, the fines Maxim was assesed where decided upon.

Maxim Staviski is the 2007 World Figure Skating Champion in Ice Dancing with partner Albena Denkova. The two are no longer skating together.

Pic of the Week

Kimmie Meissner is getting her head together. Today the Washington Post did a great write-up on Kimmie and her new training situation with Richard Callaghan and Todd Eldredge in Florida. Here are some of her own words...

"One of the weirdest things, when I got down here, was, 'Oh my gosh, they are skating with me, chasing me around the rink,' " said Meissner. "Todd makes me go faster. He's always saying, 'Go! I'm going to beat you!' They come out, they look at takeoffs, they want to see landings. It was really intimidating when I first came down here. I feel like I'm a different person. I've gone through some stuff that wasn't too good. I feel like I've changed a lot...A lot of times from really bad experiences you can learn a lot."

"I've been doing pretty good," Meissner said. "I'm at maybe a 'B,' if I have to give myself a grade. I'm pretty close to where I want to be, but I'm still working out the kinks in my program."

Her short program music will be "Un Ange Passe" by Alain Lefevre.

"I love working with Mr. Callaghan. He's very, very nice. He probably wouldn't want me to say that--he's got his reputation--but he's been great for me."

I'm very happy Kimmie is putting things back in place. I'm looking forward to seeing the "new" Kimmie in Everett!

First Big One!

The first major Senior ISU event takes place this week. The Nebelhorn Trophy in Oberstdorf, Germany is set to take place September 25th - September 27th.

This event tends to have what some may call "B" list competitors but this season there are some big names in attendance. The men's event is chock full of competitors including Kevin Van Der Perren, Tomas Verner, Andrei Griazev, and the competitive re-debut of Nobunari Oda. Carolina Kostner will headline the ladies event. In Pairs both Savchenko and Szolkowy and Mukhortova and Trankov are slated to compete. The Ice Dance is probably the weakest of the fields but offers Emily Samuelson and Evan Bates of the U.S. their first shot at a Senior ISU title. Other American competitors include Alissa Czisny, Chrissy Hughes, Dennis Phan, Scott Smith, Denney and Barrett, Yankowskas and Coughlin, and Summersett and Gilles.

Complete listing of competitors can be found here.

UPDATE: Apparently Kostner has withdrawn from the competition. Laura Lepisto of Finland is therefore probably the favorite...probably?

Shane Sparks joins figure skating’s brightest stars

From NorwalkPlus...

On Sunday, September 28, Shane Sparks, the Emmy-nominated choreographer from hit TV shows So You Think You Can Dance? and America’s Best Dance Crew will join Olympic figure skaters and local talent in the 7th annual Ethan Allen Hotel’s Stars, Stripes, and Skates ICEtravaganza, which honors the memory of September 11 and benefits The Heritage Foundation of 9/11.

The show will take place at 3:00pm at the Danbury Ice Arena in Danbury, CT. Sparks will be joined by co-host JoJo Starbuck, a three-time U.S. pair champion and two-time Olympian.

“When Stars, Stripes, and Skates called, I made time on my calendar,” Sparks said. “I will never forget the heroes of 9/11 and I don’t want any of the kids in America to forget, either.”

For Baiul, the Ukrainian-born skating superstar who still captivates audiences around the globe, performing at the Danbury Ice Arena is a homecoming of sorts.

“I lived and trained in Connecticut for several years, and I really hope I get to reconnect with a lot of my friends and fans here,” the 1994 Olympic champion said.

Joining Baiul on the ice will be three-time world medalist Fumie Suguri; British ice dance champions Sinead and John Kerr; current U.S. ladies bronze medalist Ashley Wagner; 2008 world team member Jeremy Abbott; 2008 U.S. ice dance bronze medalists Kim Navarro and Brent Bommentre; and 2008 world junior champion Adam Rippon. In addition to the world-class roster, young area skaters will share the ice with their idols in a performance celebrating the patriotic spirit of the United States.

“For the past seven years, Ethan Allen Hotel’s Stars, Stripes, and Skates has honored the memory of those lost on September 11 while celebrating future generations of talented Americans,” said Tara Eve Modlin, founder of the Heritage Foundation of 9/11 and creator of Ethan Allen Hotel’s Stars, Stripes, and Skates. “We are very grateful to the skaters that have helped to make the previous shows a success, and are looking forward to another sensational show in 2008.”

Tickets are available for just $10 and $25; special VIP tickets, including an on-ice seat and pre-show meet-and-greet party, are $125 each. For more information or to buy tickets, visit www.danburyicearena.com or www.starsstripesandskates.org, or call (646) 435-0951.

About the Heritage Foundation of 9/11

The Heritage Foundation of 9/11 aims to teach younger generations of Americans the historical significance of September 11, 2001. In doing this, the foundation stresses the life lessons we learned in the aftermath of the attacks, patriotism, heroism, and the value of volunteering. Through the annual Ethan Allen Hotel’s Stars, Stripes and Skates show, children learn patriotism through the touching ‘red, white and blue’ group number, which includes 150 children each holding an American flag; they learn about heroism by working to raise money for different charities each year; and they learn about the importance of volunteerism by meeting their skating idols, all of whom volunteer their time to participate in the show and inspire kids to volunteer themselves.

Canada Picks it Place

Skate Canada has announced that London, Ontario will host the 2010 Canadian National Figure Skating Championships. This event will serve as the Olympic Trials for the Canadian team for the Olympics which also take place in Canada in Vancouver just six weeks later.

"Everything we need to host a first-class skating event can be found in London," said William Thompson, Skate Canada CEO. "They have always welcomed athletes, volunteers and fans with open arms and 2010 will be no exception."

Confused geographically...London sits halfway between Detroit and Toronto.

This is the second time that London will play host to the BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships. The city first held the event in 2005. London was also the site of the highly successful 2007 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships.

Junior Grand Prix: Czech Republic

The fourth event in the Junior Grand Prix has ended in Ostrava, Czech Republic and the U.S. walked away with three medals, two Gold and one silver.

The Gold went to Mens competitor Alexander Johnson. He defeated very narrowly Ivan Bariev of Russia. Angela Maxwell took the silver in the women's competition after a come from behind performance that mover her all the way up from seventh place. Gilles and Donohue also took Gold in the Ice Dance competition, winning all three portions of the competition.

Full Results can be seen here.

This week the Junior Grand Prix moves to Madrid, Spain.

Yipee!

Um...best day ever! So, I was casually reading my e-mail when VANOC, the people organizing the Olympics in 2010 send out an e-mail...

What's in this e-mail you ask...just an invitation to purchase 2009 Four Continents Cup Tickets before they go on sale!

Naturally I scream and run for my wallet, click the link on Ticketmaster, enter the little secret code for early purchase, enter my information, hold my breath...connection timed out!

So I go back and it tells me their holding tickets would I like to purchase them, I click yes, hold my breath again...and success! And I'm only four, count them...1,2,3,4 rows from the ice!

So excited...I'm going to the Olympic Test Event for Figure Skating...and all the big names will want to compete to get a feel for the arena! I know I'm using lots of exclamation points but I'm so happy! Vancouver, here I come!

Red Carpet Treatment

I'm so excited...Skate America is only 34 days away and I'm getting pumped! I used to live in Seattle so the whole Everett, Seattle, Bothell area is very familiar to me and it will be good to visit family, visit old friends, and oh yeah, see the best Grand Prix lineup of all six events!

The City of Everett is not blind to the international attention the city will be getting. Taking a page out of Spokane's playbook, the city is gearing up for the warmest figure skating welcome ever! City crews are applying fresh paint to downtown lampposts, sprucing up flower baskets and preparing to hang welcome banners along Hewitt Avenue, one of the main roads through the downtown area. Hotels are lining up French, German, Chinese and Japanese translators to accommodate guests, and downtown restaurants are expanding business hours and streamlining menus to prepare for a rush of patrons.

"It's really important that we roll out the red carpet for all of the guests who will be at the event," said Amy Spain, executive director of Snohomish County Tourism Bureau. Matt Jensen, director of marketing for the luxury hotel, said hosting a successful event required a lot of coordination and attention to detail. "The international aspect of Skate America is a lot like having an Olympic event in your area," he said.

Promoters expect the event to draw 30,000 visitors who will collectively spend a few million dollars. And they're anticipating a worldwide television audience of 2.4 million people. In just 34 days, the cameras of NBC Sports, Canada's CBC Television and Japan's TV Asahi will be focused on Everett.

Okay...I'm super pumped now!

Korean Karaoke Pop Princess?

Who knew that Yu-Na Kim liked to relax by doing Karaoke to Korean pop songs!

Anywho, Yu-Na is on a mission to create the perfect program! Her free skate this season is Scheherazade, and it's a piece of music she's always wanted to skate too. "Though many skaters have used this music, I don`t mind. I will make people think about me when they hear Scheherazade," she said. She and her coach Brian Orser are committed to getting her to the top of the podium this season.

Yu-Na's first scheduled event will be Skate America (yay!) and she says she's healthy and on track to be ready. "I`ve completely recovered from last year’s injury. And the pain in my hips and waist are gone. I will try to stay in good condition for the first competition at the end of October."

Yu-Na is also planning on college having applied to Korea University in Seoul. "I will miss high school but at the same time, I`m looking forward to college life, though it hasn't hit me yet."

Full plate for Yu-Na Kim.

Help TripAdvisor Decide How to Donate $1 Million

The love of figure skating has taken me around the world and TripAdvisor is always a handy resource. Now, TripAdvisor is doing something very cool...

TripAdvisor is donating $1 million to five great causes and letting the public decide how the money gets split up. What a cool idea!

Under the weather...

Stéphane Lambiel is continuing to deal with an abductor injury that he sustained at the 2008 World Figure Skating Championships last March in Goteborg.

He's been in Germany seeing a sports medicine specialist who is suggesting that Stéphane take a few weeks off.

His new programs aren't finished and his training is behind schedule so his participation in the Grand Prix series is in question. Stephane is scheduled to compete at Skate Canada in Ottawa and the Trophée Eric Bompard Cachemire in Paris. Skate Canada is only the second event in the series which may not give him enough time to prepare.

Good luck on your recovery Stéphane.

Prima Donna?

The joy of having a blogroll with RSS Feeds is being completely up-to-date with all that is happening in the skating world. One of us skating bloggers is bound to find out some great info for all of us to leach onto and disseminate.

Well thank you Required Elements via Miho Entwistle favorites because this one is a gem!

Guess if Emanuel Sandhu is to make a figure skating comeback it will have to wait just a bit longer...he just made it through the auditions of So You Think You Can Dance Canada. Oh, and the whole audition video is on YouTube...which means it's posted below...priceless!

Watch the video...higlights include a perfect triple axel, the "fan the face" move, and what I'm calling the "Bollywood Robot." Wow! We'll have to keep an eye on this one.

Judge Paul Becker thinks Emanuel has a slight Prima Donna complex...O Brother! I wish I got CTV here in the U.S. Canada is getting all the good stuff...I'm so jealous of our friends just slightly to the north!

UPDATE: You can read the entire CTV bit on Sandhu's latest venture here!

SECOND UPDATE: Apparently Sandhu...can't dance...at least not well enough to make the top cut. Rumors are that he fell a bit short from making the show. Too bad...guess it's back to the ice for him. Poor alas...you can see the rejection video below as well.

Win tickets to Nemo ... and a skate lesson, too

From the Liverpool Echo...

For all my UK Blog Readers...

DISNEY On Ice is on its way to Liverpool this month bringing one of the all-time favourite fishy characters to life.

Disney/Pixar’s Finding Nemo skates into the ECHO Arena from Wednesday, September 24 to Sunday, September 28.The new production plunges audiences into the amazing underwater world of clownfish Nemo, his overprotective father Marlin and comically optimistic Dory.

Gliding smoothly across the ice, skaters costumed in many forms of sealife, perfectly emulate the natural flow of fish through water. A digital projection screen combines with aquatic lighting to create the depth and vastness of the ocean.

To book tickets call the ECHO Arena box office on 0844 8000 400 or visit www.accliverpool.com. Or you could be one of the winners in our Time Off competition.

One lucky Nemo fan will not only win a free family ticket to the show and a Disney goody bag ... but also a free skating lesson from some of the cast after the show and a meeting with a surprise guest!

Plus, on each of the five show days, we have another family ticket and Disney goody bag to give away.

All you have to do to be in with a chance is find Nemo, he’s hiding somewhere in tonight’s ECHO, and answer the question beside him. Once you’ve done that, details of how to enter the competition are in the panel below.

Happy searching ...

2008 Grand Prix Going Online

Well, since Figure Skating isn't the cash cow it use to be here in the U.S., with the exception of Skate America, Americans will have to go to either icenetwork.com or YouTube to catch the Grand Prix of Figure Skating.

Disney, which held the rights and showcased the Grand Prix on ESPN, ended their contract with the ISU last season. NBC only picked up Skate America, Nationals, and Worlds, which left no home for the other Grand Prix events. There will also be no television coverage of the Four Continents Cup or Europeans. These too will be available on icenetwork.com.

"This unprecedented coverage of these prestigious ISU events illustrates the commitment of icenetwork.com to bring more skating coverage than ever before to fans of the sport around the country," David Raith, executive director of the U.S. Figure Skating Association, which co-owns icenetwork.com with MLB Advanced Media, said in a statement.

Interestingly, these events will only be available to U.S. subscribers of icenetwork (I suspect because everyone else is lucky enough to have television coverage!). So, for the first time I'll be tuning to icenetwork for my figure skating fix...but I'm not very pleased about it!

Patriot Day

David said about him: "I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay... Acts 2:25-27

Please take time today to remember all those who were lost on this tragic day. Take time to remember those that are currently working to protect us. Most importantly, take time to give your husband, wife, sister, brother, mother, father, children, or friend a hug...celebrate life.

Pic of the Week

We'll make this a Canadian Double Header today!

I'm still shocked at the below post so I decided to make the Pic of the Week about the effect of Buttle's retirement.

Meet Canada's premier men's skater and best hope for Canadian Gold in Vancouver in 2010. But of course we already know him...it's Patrick Chan!

With J. Buttle's retirement he becomes the cream of the crop in Canada. Well some might argue he already was. While Buttle struggled on the Grand Prix, Chan did well and even won Grand Prix Paris, clinching a spot at the Grand Prix Final, Buttle stayed home. Patrick went on to defeat Buttle at Canadian Nationals but of course Buttle won World's while Chan finished 7th. I'll let you decide who was the actual "Cream of the Crop!"

But moving forward, he is the one that Canada will be hoping can bring home the goods in 2010 Vancouver. Watch the video below and listen to the commentators (Chris Howarth and Nicky Slater) and the praise they lavish on Chan at the conclusion of his World Free Skate.

UPDATE: Patrick Chan feels the heat from Buttle's retirement.

SHOCKER!

Oh my goodness! So apparently Jeffery Buttle has decided to retire from Olympic Eligible competition...GASP! Let me make sure you're understanding this...The reigning World Champion, whose skating has never been better, is opting to leave eligible competition with the Olympics in his home nation in less than two years! Wow...I'm speechless!

In an interview with CBC News (Canada) he said, "After a few months, and after I recovered from the high, I decided to look at everything I've accomplished. And coming to this decision, I had to make sure that I was proud and satisfied with everything that I've done. At that point, I was sure."

But with the Olympics so close, how could he come to this decision? "That was definitely the battle that was going on in my mind. I had to figure out if that was something that I really wanted. After the world championship, I was so happy with winning that I had to reflect on how important that was to me and having the Olympics here in Vancouver is important to me but winning them wasn't. It just wasn't in my heart."

Buttle has accomplished a bit...He's won three Canadian National Titles, an Olympic Bronze, and in Sweden took the World Title. He has a smattering of other titles and medals from various competitions.

My head is still spinning here but that is a major blow to the Canadian Men's Team that will now look to Patrick Chan to make their case in Vancouver in 2010. What seemed like a shoe-in for three spots at the Olympics is now in jeopardy. Canada will need to muster some more consistency between now and the World Championships in LA if they wish to have max representation at the Olympics.

Buttle's retirement may give Emanuel Sandhu a reason to attempt a comeback but that seems less likely daily.

Wow, I'm still in shock! But at least Buttle went out with a bang! "Representing Canada around the world has been an honour and I'm very proud of my achievements as a competitive figure skater," Buttle said. "I've had so much support throughout my career and I'll be forever grateful to my fans, coaches and of course, my family."

Parker heads back

All you Parker Pennington fans out there might be interested to learn that today he has decided to leave Audrey Weisiger in D.C. and head back to Cleveland, Ohio to train once again with Carol Heiss-Jenkins.

He will also be attending Baldwin College this fall. If you're into art, Parker has put some of his personal art pieces up for sale to raise money for his training. Quite the entrepreneur, he's also offering seminars to skating clubs, coaches, and skaters, along with offering his expertise in directing ice shows.

Wow...well rounded individual!

In Love!

There has been so much other news I almost forgot to to report!

This past week, Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon were married in Montréal! They were joined by their families and many skaters including Brian Orser, Jeff Buttle, David Pelletier, Jennifer Robinson, Joannie Rochette, Jessica Dube & Bryce Davison, Sasha Cohen and Michael Weiss. Talk about a star-studded wedding!

"This was obviously a day that Patrice and I have looked forward to, and it was very special to be able to share it with our friends and family in Montreal," said Marie-France. "We are very excited about this new chapter in our lives together, and very much appreciate all the well wishes we have received from everyone."

How wonderful! How do you say in French...Je te souhaite un mariage merveilleux et un futur très heureux!

Junior Grand Prix: Italy

Round two of the Junior Grand Prix of Skating is in the books. American brought home three medals from Merano, Italy. Full results can be found here.

The U.S. took home Gold in Ice Dance and Ladies singles and Silver in Men's singles. Melissa Bulanhagui won both the short and free skates to take the title in Italy. Madison Chock and Greg Zuerlein won all three segments of the Ice Dance competition to achieve the same feat. Curran Oi won the silver in men's singles after finishing third in the free skate.

Next week the Junior Grand Prix continues in Mexico City, Mexico.

Scott Hamilton "Trumps In"

"You're fired!"

Actually, Scott Hamilton's hired as the latest celebrity to join NBC's The Apprentice! The second season will air on Thursday's early next year when ER reaches it's conclusion.

Celebrity Apprentice is similar to the regular Apprentice only stars are competing for their favorite charity. My guess is that Scott's will be the Scott Hamilton CARES Initiative. Fitting, as we're all currently Standing Up to Cancer!

Quite a cast is assembling for the show including: Joan Rivers, Dennis Rodman, Tony Danza, Brande Roderick, Petra Nemcova, Heather Mills, Khloe Kardashian, Joe Francis, and more.

Oh goodness, much like Dancing with the Stars I'm gonna have to have a weekly update for Celebrity Apprentice and Scott Hamilton. How about "Hamilton for Hire?"

Stand Up to Cancer!

Tonight, all the major networks will simultaneously air Stand Up to Cancer!

Stand Up To Cancer is a groundbreaking movement backed by an innovative approach to cancer research aimed at ending cancer’s reign as a leading cause of death.

As fans of figure skating, we know how important cancer research is as some of our beloved athletes have benefitted from that research. Peggy Fleming and Scott Hamilton can both tell you personally of the need to support this cause.

Also, tonight, Dorothy Hamil will share her story with America, as she began breast cancer treatment earlier this year.

Please take time to watch this star-studded, ground breaking event and if your pocketbook or wallet allows, please donate to this amazing cause.

Great Update on Irina Slutskaya

Figure Skating Translations has posted an amazing post on Irina Slutskaya. She talks of her life, her career all the way back to Junior's, her Olympic experiences, and her new life as a mother and wife.

I had now idea she hosted a Russian Show called "Ice Age" and she did it while pregnant...amazing!

ISU Making Great Choices!

The Junior Grand Prix is in full swing but the Senior Grand Prix is just around the corner!

This year, much like last year, the ISU has decided to allow a nation that doesn't hold a Grand Prix event to host the Grand Prix Final! Last year, the final was in Turin, Italy; this year it will be in Goyang City, Korea.

And what a great place to have the Grand Prix Final! Goyang City recently held the 2008 Four Continents Cup, an event that played to sold out audiences. With the success of Yu-Na Kim, Korea is going skating crazy! Next to the U.S. and Canada, Korea is the nation that I get the most blog hits from!

I think it's great that the ISU is willing to spread the love a bit with the Grand Prix Final...it's a great way to get everyone excited about skating. Good choice ISU!

UPDATE: Get this...Korea has a National Brand! It's called Dynamic Korea and is used to promte Korea internationally. It just so happens that Yu-Na Kim is a promotional ambassador of Dynamic Korea. Assuming she makes the Grand Prix Final (and as the two time defending Champ I hope she does!) you can be sure she'll be everywhere in Goyang City!

Where Are They Now: Ice skater Deann (Beideck) Olson by Dan Raley

Deann Beideck was a competitive figure skater on a fast track, earning gold-medal standing in just four years, an athletic feat that drew attention in what was a fairly new magazine at the time, Sports Illustrated.

She took part in the 1958 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Minneapolis, traveling by car to the event with siblings Ray and Ila Ray Hadley, who were fellow Seattle competitors and future Olympians.

Not long after that long ride, this local and regional champion made a difficult and likely fateful choice: Just 20, she married a bellhop she met in Sun Valley, Idaho, gave up her skating career and followed him to Chicago and dental school.

In 1961, she opened up a newspaper to read the horrifying news that a Boeing 707 had crashed on final approach in Brussels, Belgium. All 72 people on board were killed, including the entire 18-member U.S. figure skating team, plus 16 coaches, officials and parents. They were headed to Prague, Czechoslovakia, for the world championships, which were immediately canceled.

Among the dead were the Hadleys and their mother and coach, Linda.

"They were like my best friends, and when they were killed, it was unfathomable," said the now Deann Olson, 69. "Had I not gotten married, I very well could have been on that plane.

"It took several years for the American national team to be rebuilt and become competitive again internationally. It also took time for Olson to feel comfortable with boarding a plane after what happened to the Hadleys.

"I had a fear of flying after the accident, that something was going to happen," she said. "I got over it.

"Olson grew up in Ballard, discovered skating when she was 12 and graduated from Ballard High in 1957. She bought her first set of skates for a quarter. Her parents bought the coffee shop at the local rink and operated it to facilitate her newfound interest. She did her homework there and sometimes slept on a cot in a back room. Mostly, she skated as much as possible, which was two hours in the morning, five in the afternoon and another at night.

A late starter as a competitive skater, she achieved gold-medal stature in Sun Valley, passing the eight levels of testing in what was considered record time. She was a college student when that took place, first at Washington and then Wyoming, following that aforementioned bellhop to the latter school and becoming a cheerleader there.

While giving up skating primarily for marriage, she also figured she had run out of time.

"I had to skip a lot of levels," Olson said of her gold quest. "No one knew me. I didn't have all that background. And women athletes, if they were 21, were considered over the hill.

"She might have put competitive skating behind her, but she didn't abandon the ice altogether. She became a coach, eventually earning a masters rating in freestyle, figures and precision. She has trained skaters at every level and took an American girls team to Hong Kong in 1998.

Olson managed an ice arena in Denver and was hired to open one in Palm Springs, Calif. In 1990, she moved to Sun Valley, the place that had provided her with many of her skating successes, including her gold-medal ranking, and she ran that rink. Hollywood actors sought her out for instruction.

She taught Richard Dreyfuss how to ice-dance, gave lessons to Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis, and sharpened Bruce Willis' skates on request, though skate sharpening wasn't something she had done before.

"Arnold became quite a good skater," Olson said. "I wanted to teach him how to snowplow, and he said, 'No Deann, I don't want to stop, I want to go fast.'"

From there, she moved to Kennewick before back to Denver, her current residence. She lives with her third husband, John, and mother, Dorothy, 90. She's raised four grown children. Outside of skating, she's been a bank director in California and Colorado. Olson still teaches people how to skate, counting prospective young hockey players among her students in recent years, using a rink shared with the NHL's Colorado Avalanche.

She has no regrets over her competitive skating decisions, understanding her career easily could have ended up in tragedy had she pursued it longer. She still has her health and a desire to get out on the ice.

The former Deann Beideck, who used to eat, sleep and skate at the rink, says she'll know when it's time to give it up."I'll retire when I can't tie my skates anymore," she promised.

Pic of the Week

So often we focus all of our attention on the big skating names that grace our sports. I like the beginning of the figure skating season because it allows some of the amazing talent that exists in the Junior ranks to shine a bit!

This past week, the very talented Kristine Musademba got her season started the right way with a win at Junior Grand Prix, France in Courchevel. Skating to Handel's "The Queen of Sheba," she easily defeated her teammate Becky Bereswill who took silver.

Last year, Kristine won the Pewter Medal at U.S. Nationals in Junior Ladies and has her sights set on an even higher podium finish this year.

Coincidentally, her favorite foreign city is Vancouver (wouldn't a trip in 2010 be fun!), she loves America's Top Model, and would most like to meet Nelson Mandela because he keeps his dreams alive in the face of adversity. What a wonderful person!

Youth Olympics 2012

Very exciting news...the IOC has created a commission to evaluate the four bid cities for the first ever Winter Youth Olympics in 2012.

The Youth Olympics will feature young athletes in their teens (14-18) competing in seven sports including: skiing, biathlon, ice hockey, bobsled, curling, luge, and of course figure skating.

Four cities are in the running to host: Harbin, China; Innsbruck, Austria; Lillehammer, Norway; and Kuopio, Finland.

I'm left to wonder how nations will choose the competitors for this event, specifically figure skating. Will it be junior competitors? Will senior competitors fitting into the age range be allowed?

In any case, it's nice to get a mini-Winter Olympics in during the years their are only Summer Games and vice-versa for the Youth Summer Games in 2010 in Singapore (which is pictured here celebrating their successful bid!).

Junior Grand Prix: France

The results of the Junior Grand Prix in Courchevel, France can be found here.

U.S. Ladies competitor Kristine Musademba and Ice Dancers Maia and Alex Shibutani each skated away with Gold. Becky Bereswill and Armin Mabanoozadeh each took silver in ladies and men's single for the U.S.

This week, the Junior Grand Prix moves to Merano, Italy.
